Maine Black Community Development serves to elevate and center the voices of all African Americans in Maine, including those who identify as African Immigrants and others who identify as part of the African/American Diaspora in the programs and policies of the Maine State Government. The Diaspora includes those from all of the Americas, the continent of Africa as well as the Islands. Currently Maine Black Community Development has focused its work on the disproportionate impacts of COVID-19 on communities of color and in particular the African/American Diaspora community in Maine. Now, we are looking at ways to address hunger and disparities in COVID-19 through sustainably improving the food insecurity issues facing low-income families of this community.
Mission: The purpose of Maine Black Community Development is to improve the quality of life for people who primarily identify as being from the African and/or American diaspora through a self-determination framework while advancing racial equity and justice for all people living in Maine.
